Ethidium homodimer is a staining dye for dsDNA, ssDNA, oligonucleotides, triplex DNA and RNA. It will not cross intact cell membranes and can be used to test cell viability. Ethidium homodimer is also a reagent for the fluorimetric detection of nucleic acids.

Usage :
The DNA binding of each ethidium homodimer molecule covers four base pairs and is believed to occur by intercalation. Because the dye is highly positively charged, it cannot cross cell membranes to stain living cells.
