Ethidium homodimer is a staining dye for dsDNA, ssDNA, oligonucleotides, triplex DNA and RNA. It will not cross intact cell membranes and can be used to test cell viability. Ethidium homodimer is also a reagent for the fluorimetric detection of nucleic acids. Ethidium homodimer inhibits polymerase chain reaction by binding to inhibitor molecules and preventing DNA replication.
