QUICK LINKS

Ethambutol is an efficient antibiotic with bacteriostatic, antimicrobial, and antitubercular properties. It disrupts the synthesis of arabinogalactan, a key polysaccharide in the mycobacterial cell wall, by blocking arabinosyl transferases. This inhibits the polymerization of cell wall arabinan and lipoarabinomannan, leading to the accumulation of D-arabinofuranosyl-P-decaprenol, an intermediate in arabinan biosynthesis. Consequently, bacterial growth is halted as a result of inhibited cell wall complex production and increased permeability.
