Erythromycin ethyl succinate, a semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic, is derived from erythromycin, a natural product sourced from the fermentation broth of Streptomyces erythreus. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit within the bacterial cell. This interaction disrupts the formation of the initiation complex, which is essential for translating mRNA into proteins. Consequently, the bacterial cell becomes incapable of producing proteins, leading to its demise.
