Enalaprilat dihydrate is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor that is derived from the prodrug enalapril. It is a potent and specific inhibitor of ACE, which plays a role in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Enalaprilat dihydrate acts by preventing the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, a vasoconstrictor, and by inhibiting the degradation of bradykinin, a vasodilator. This dual action results in vasodilation and decreased blood pressure. Enalaprilat dihydrate is used in experimental applications to study the physiological and pathophysiological roles of the renin-angiotensin system.
