DL-Lactonitrile is a useful compoud for the synthesis of lactamides through the fed-batch method, using the nitrile hydratase of Rhodococcus pyridinivorans NIT-36. It is an organic compound containing a hydroxyl group in the alpha position. DL-Lactonitrile finds applications as a reactant in organic synthesis and as a reagent for the production of metal hydroxides. The synthesis of DL-Lactonitrile can be achieved by reacting phosphorus pentoxide, hydrogen gas, and ammonia. The hydroxyl groups can form acids upon interaction with metal hydroxides and inorganic acids like phosphoric acid. The mechanism of this process has been studied using various techniques, including X-ray diffraction. Furthermore, DL-Lactonitrile plays a role in facilitating cross-linking reactions between amide groups through the formation of amide bonds, as well as in inducing enzyme activity.
