DL-2-Aminoadipic acid is an excitatory amino acid analogue, which functions as a Gl Syn (glutamine synthetase) inhibitor. Studies indicate that DL-2-Aminoadipic acid is a gliotoxin in low concentrations and displays a low amount of neurotoxicity at longer times of exposure. In addition, DL-2-Aminoadipic acid causes cytotoxicity in N18 neuroblastoma-rat retina hybrid (N18RE105) cells via competitive inhibition of [35S]cystine uptake.
