Diosgenin, a steroidal saponin present in various plant species. Diosgenin is employed to synthesize progesterone, a hormone for addressing menopausal symptoms and contraception. While the complete mechanism of action for diosgenin remains elusive, research indicates its ability to influence key enzymes and receptors. For instance, studies have demonstrated its capacity to modulate the activity of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), an enzyme involved in the production of pro-inflammatory compounds. Additionally, diosgenin has been observed to regulate the activity of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), a transcription factor responsible for governing inflammatory and immune responses.
