Diltiazem is a benzothiazepine derivative that operates by blocking voltage-sensitive calcium channels, thereby controlling the mechanisms that regulate calcium ion influx. This action not only affects calcium release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum but also limits the entry of calcium into the myocardial and vascular smooth muscle cell membranes.
