Diflunisal is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory that functions as an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase, such as COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes. It exerts its mechanism of action by irreversibly acetylating the active site of the COX enzymes, thereby prohibiting the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandin H2. This inhibition leads to a decrease in the production of prostaglandins, which are involved in the inflammatory response. By reducing the levels of prostaglandins, diflunisal helps to alleviate pain, fever, and inflammation. Its mechanism of action at the molecular level involves interfering with the synthesis of prostaglandins, ultimately contributing to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.
