Diethylamino-acetic acid, also known as N,N-Diethylglycine (DEG), an amino acid derivative, is synthesized by reacting glycine and ethyl bromide in the presence of sodium hydroxide and a base. It finds application in enzyme kinetics and the study of enzyme inhibitors. Diethylamino-acetic acid acts as an inhibitor for several enzymes, such as glutathione-S-transferase, cytosolic and mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase, and monoamine oxidase. It also acts as a GABA receptor agonist, elevating GABA levels in the brain while reducing glutamate levels. Furthermore, Diethylamino-acetic acid exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-apoptotic effects.
