Dichlorvos is an organophosphate insecticide that functions as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. It acts by irreversibly binding to the active site of acetylcholinesterase, preventing the breakdown of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This leads to an accumulation of acetylcholine at the synaptic cleft, resulting in overstimulation of cholinergic receptors and subsequent disruption of neurotransmission. At the molecular level, dichlorvos forms a covalent bond with the serine residue at the active site of acetylcholinesterase, inhibiting its enzymatic activity. This mechanism of action ultimately leads to paralysis and death in insects.
