Dibutyryl-cGMP, a membrane permeable cGMP analog, used in various experiments to model cGMP interactions and effects on different biological molecules. This compound has been reported to play a role of an intracellular messenger in primary sensory neurons of the autonomic nervous system. Studies suggest that Dibutyryl-cGMP modulates a dihydropyridine-sensitive Ca2+ entry mechanism in rat pituitary cells. In vitro experiments on pancreatic acinar cells and guinea pig gallbladder cells suggest that this product competitively inhibits the contractile effect of cholecystokinin octapeptide, and contraction induced by sulfated gastrin-17. Furthermore, Dibutyryl-cGMP demonstrates the ability to shorten and reduce repolarization, overshoot of action potentials, and slightly hyperpolarize the cells in the atrial working muscle.
