Diazinon is an organophosphate insecticide that functions as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. Its mode of action involves binding to the active site of acetylcholinesterase, preventing the breakdown of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This leads to an accumulation of acetylcholine at the synaptic cleft, resulting in overstimulation of cholinergic receptors and subsequent disruption of nerve impulse transmission. As a result, the insecticide causes paralysis and death in targeted pests by interfering with their nervous system function. At the molecular level, Diazinon disrupts the normal enzymatic breakdown of acetylcholine, leading to the accumulation of this neurotransmitter and ultimately causing neurotoxic effects in the targeted organisms. This mechanism of action makes Diazinon an effective for controlling insect populations in experimental applications.
