Di-n-butyl N,N-diethylcarbamoylphosphonate functions as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. It acts by binding to the active site of the enzyme, preventing the hydrolysis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This inhibition leads to an accumulation of acetylcholine at the synaptic cleft, resulting in prolonged stimulation of cholinergic receptors. At the molecular level, Di-n-butyl N,N-diethylcarbamoylphosphonate forms strong, covalent bonds with the serine residue in the active site of acetylcholinesterase, effectively blocking its enzymatic activity.
