Demeton-O, classified as a synthetic organophosphate insecticide and acaricide, finds application in managing various pests within agricultural and horticultural crops. Belonging to the organophosphate chemical family, which holds a prominent position among globally employed insecticides, it employs dimethoate as its active ingredient. Dimethoate, an organophosphate compound, functions as an inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme pivotal in acetylcholine breakdown. As a consequence of this enzyme inhibition, Demeton-O leads to an accumulation of acetylcholine in the nervous system, ultimately resulting in the demise of the targeted insect or mite. The fundamental mode of action resembles that of other organophosphates like parathion and malathion, all sharing the commonality of blocking acetylcholinesterase to trigger the buildup of acetylcholine, culminating in the demise of the target insect or mite.
