Deferoxamine Mesylate, an iron chelator, has been found to inhibit thymidine incorporation in cell cultures which is antagonized by iron supplementation. Iron has been reported to be involved in the control of enzymatic activities that regulate DNA synthesis in cells. Deferoxamine mesylate has been found to induce apoptosis by causing chromatin condensation. Additionally, it has the ability to induce p53 and cell accumulation in the G1 phase of cell growth and increase p21 mRNA levels without any detectable protein products. Furthermore, studies suggest that Deferoxamine mesylate is capable of activating HIF-1alpha (hypoxia-inducible factor 1alpha), consequently causing transcription of numerous genes that are associated with hypoxia. Deferoxamine Mesylate is an inhibitor of Prolyl Hydroxylase.
