D-Gluconic Acid, Potassium Salt, known as Potassium gluconate, is a common nutritional supplement providing potassium. Potassium, an essential nutrient, plays a vital role in cellular function as the primary intracellular cation. While potassium chloride (KCl) is used in dietary supplements, D-Gluconic Acid, Potassium Salt is preferred for its palatability and non-acidifying properties. Within human cells, potassium is the most abundant cation, maintaining concentration gradients through the sodium-potassium–activated adenosinetriphosphatase (Na+K+ATPase) enzyme. These gradients are for nerve impulse signaling, physiological renal function, acid-base balance, and metabolic processes. Intracellular potassium also acts as a reservoir, preventing excessive loss from the body. Moreover, D-gluconic acid, has demonstrated the ability to enhance K+ transport in erythrocytes, thereby increasing glycolytic speed. Research further indicates that D-Gluconic Acid, Potassium Salt promotes lactate production, ATP content, and facilitates the reduction of methemoglobin (Hemoglobin γ) in rat erythrocytes. Additionally, D-Gluconic Acid, Potassium Salt serves as a sequestering compound for metal ions in alkaline systems.
