D-Glucoheptono-1,4-lactone is an organic synthesis reagent. Howiinol A, an antitumor compound, was synthesized in 9 steps from D-Glucoheptono-1,4-lactone. D-Glucoheptono-1,4-lactone may be used in the synthesis of the analogs to Howiinol A, as well. D-Glucoheptono-1,4-lactone may also be used in the organic synythesis of N-alkyl-N-(2-hydroxyethyl)aldonamides and N-cycloalkylaldonamides.
