Cytochalasin B is used in actin polymerization studies. It is a metabolite of the fungus Drechslera dematoidea which binds to the barbed end of actin filaments resulting in inhibition of both the association and dissociation of subunits. Cytochalasin B is used as a tool for cytological research. As opposed to other Cytochalasins, cytochalasin A (sc-204705) and Cytochalasin B bind to the glucose transporter and inhibit monosaccharide transport across the plasma membrane. Cytochalasin B inhibits phagocytosis by both mononuclear phagocytes and polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Cytochalasin B is also known as Phomin, NSC 107658, and (3E,5R,9R,11E,12aS,13S,15S,15aS,16S,18aS)-6,7,8,9,10,12a,13,14,15,15a,16,17-dodecahydro-5,13-dihydroxy-9,15-dimethyl-14-methylene-2H-oxacyclotetradecino[2,3-d]isoindole-2,18(5H)-dione.
