Croton oil functions as a potent irritant and inflammatory agent when applied to the skin or mucous membranes. It induces a strong inflammatory response by activating protein kinase C and increasing the production of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes. This leads to the dilation of blood vessels, increased vascular permeability, and the recruitment of immune cells to the site of application.
