QUICK LINKS

Croton oil functions as a potent irritant and inflammatory agent when applied to the skin or mucous membranes. It induces a strong inflammatory response by activating protein kinase C and increasing the production of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes. This leads to the dilation of blood vessels, increased vascular permeability, and the recruitment of immune cells to the site of application. Croton oil stimulates the release of cytokines and chemokines, further amplifying the inflammatory response. At the molecular level, croton oil interacts with specific receptors and signaling pathways to trigger these pro-inflammatory effects, which may be useful for studying inflammatory processes in experimental models.
