Colominic acid sodium salt from Escherichia coli is a chemical used to research on protein polysialylation processes. It is a substrate for CMP-NeuAc:(NeuAcα2→8)n (colominic acid) sialyltransferase. It has been used in the study of carbohydrate-binding proteins, the structure and function of bacterial cell walls, as a substrate for the study of the enzymatic synthesis of polysaccharides, and as a source of monosaccharides for the study of glycosylation reactions. It may act to have anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-cancer, anti-viral, and anti-parasitic effects in vitro.
