Closantel belongs to the benzimidazole class of compounds. With a history spanning over three decades, closantel has maintained its widespread usage in veterinary medicine. In vitro studies have confirmed its efficacy against diverse parasite species. The mechanism of action employed by closantel involves the inhibition of fumarate reductase, an essential enzyme involved in fumarate synthesis. Through this inhibition, closantel disrupts the energy metabolism of parasites, leading to the accumulation of fumarate and ultimately resulting in their demise.
