Clonidine hydrochloride is an antihypertensive alpha2A-AR (alpha2-AR adrenergic receptor) agonist and I1 imidazoline receptor ligand. This compound acts on alpha-1 adrenoceptors as a partial agonist, causing relaxation of the mesenteric artery pre-contracted with norepinephrine or contraction of preparations pre-contracted with endothelin. Clonidine may hyperpolarize the plasma membrane and open K+ channels of mesenteric artery by affecting alpha-2 adrenoceptors. Clonidine hydrochloride is an activator of Nischarin.
