cis,cis-Muconic acid (CCMA) is a naturally-occurring organic acid used as an important intermediate in the synthesis of a variety of compounds. For example, it is used in the manufacture of several widely-used consumer plastics and dyes. Its microbial production via extending shikimate pathway has been reported. In vitro studies have been conducted to investigate the effects of cis,cis-Muconic acid on cell proliferation, apoptosis, activities of enzymes involved in metabolic pathways, and the expression of certain genes. Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties have been found.
