Cinnarizine is a calcium channel blocker that functions by inhibiting the entry of calcium ions. This action results in the relaxation of vascular smooth muscle and a reduction in peripheral vascular resistance. Cinnarizine also exhibits antihistaminic properties by blocking H1 receptors, which contributes to its ability to alleviate symptoms of motion sickness. Cinnarizine′s calcium channel blocking activity is achieved through its interaction with specific binding sites on the L-type calcium channels, leading to the inhibition of calcium influx. This mechanism of action ultimately leads to the dilation of blood vessels and a reduction in the contractility of smooth muscle cells. Cinnarizine′s antihistaminic effects are mediated by its competitive antagonism of histamine at the H1 receptor, thereby preventing the activation of these receptors by histamine. Cinnarizine′s dual mechanism of action as a calcium channel blocker and H1 receptor antagonist contributes to its functional role in experimental applications.
