Cimetidine hydrochloride is a histamine H2-receptor antagonist that functions by competitively inhibiting the action of histamine at the H2 receptors of the parietal cells in the stomach. This inhibition leads to a diminished volume of gastric secretions, along with a lowered concentration of hydrogen ions. By interfering with the binding of histamine to its receptor, cimetidine hydrochloride effectively decreases the production of stomach acid, which may be useful for studying the regulation of gastric acid secretion. At the molecular level, cimetidine hydrochloride interacts with the histamine H2 receptors, preventing the activation of intracellular signaling pathways that lead to the release of gastric acid.
