Chlorzoxazone works by blocking the mast cells from releasing their contents, which includes histamine and the slow-reacting substance of anaphylaxis (SRS-A), both of which are involved in type I allergic reactions. The compound may also lessen the emission of inflammatory substances known as leukotrienes. Its mechanism of action likely involves the suppression of calcium and potassium influx, resulting in inhibited neuronal activity and muscle relaxation. Chlorzoxazone is a skeletal muscle relaxant.
