Cevimeline-d4 Hydrochloride Salt is a rigid analogue of acetylcholine which functions as a muscarinic M1 and M3 receptor agonist. This analogue functions by activating the acetylcholine receptors on salivary acinar cells. The effects of Cevimeline-d4 Hydrochloride Salt can be inhibited by atropine. Studies indicate that Cevimeline-d4 Hydrochloride Salt increases the intracellular concentration of calcium ions in vitro via binding to muscarinic receptors. Alternate studies show that Cevimeline-d4 Hydrochloride Salt can excite superior salivatory neurons via enhancement in excitability of the presynaptic and postsynaptic muscarinic receptors.
