Cerulenin is a potent inhibitor of fatty acid and polyketide biosynthesis in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Cerulenin irreversibly inhibits the enzyme beta-ketoacyl-ACP synthase, which is involved in the biosynthesis of fatty acids. This inhibition leads to a decrease in the production of fatty acids and ultimately disrupts the formation of cell membranes. Cerulenin can be used to study the role of fatty acids in various cellular processes.
