QUICK LINKS

Cephalothin, also known as cefalotin or CET, belongs to the class of organic compounds called cephalosporin 3′-esters. Cephalothin works by binding to and inactivating penicillin-binding proteins (PBP) located on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall. These PBPs play a role in the assembly and reshaping of the cell wall during cell division. Cephalothin is characterized by its acetoxymethyl and (2-thienylacetyl)nitrilo moieties at positions 3 and 7, respectively, of its core structure.
