Cephalexin inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls. It achieves this by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) on the bacterial cell membrane, which are essential for the cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains during cell wall synthesis. By binding to PBPs, Cephalexin disrupts the formation of the cell wall, leading to the weakening and eventual lysis of the bacterial cell. This mechanism of action ultimately results in the inhibition of bacterial growth and reproduction. Cephalexin is able to penetrate the bacterial cell membrane, allowing it to exert its bactericidal effects intracellularly.
