CENP-K, also known as centromere protein K, P33, Solt, FKSG14, AF5alpha, or ICEN37, is a crucial 269 amino acid component of the CENPA-CAD complex, which is essential for proper assembly and function of the centromere during cell division. CENP-K is localized exclusively to the centromere, a specialized chromatin structure that plays a vital role in mitotic progression and chromosome segregation. The centromere serves as the attachment point for spindle fibers, ensuring accurate distribution of chromosomes to daughter cells. CENP-K′s involvement in the assembly and incorporation of kinetochore proteins into centromeres is critical for maintaining genomic stability. CENP-K is expressed at high levels in fetal liver tissue and at lower levels in adult placenta and lung, indicating its importance during development.
