QUICK LINKS

Cefodizime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that functions as a bactericidal agent by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. It achieves this by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, such as PBP-3, leading to the disruption of peptidoglycan cross-linking during cell wall synthesis. This ultimately results in the lysis and death of the bacterial cell. Cefodizime′s mode of action involves interfering with the transpeptidation and transglycosylation processes, which are essential for the structural integrity of the bacterial cell wall. By targeting these specific cellular processes, cefodizime effectively disrupts the growth and proliferation of susceptible bacteria. This mechanism of action makes cefodizime useful for studying bacterial cell wall synthesis and the development of potential strategies for combating antibiotic resistance.
