Cefacetrile is a cephalosporin antibiotic and an antibacterial. It works by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located on the inner membrane of bacterial cell walls, resulting in the inactivation of these enzymes. PBPs are involved in the final stages of building the cell wall and reshaping it during growth and division. When these enzymes are inactivated, it interferes with the cross-linkage of peptidoglycan chains, which are essential for the strength and rigidity of the bacterial cell wall. As a result, the cell wall weakens and the bacteria eventually undergo cell lysis.
