Cariporide is a NHE-1 (sodium-hydrogen exchanger isoform-1) inhibitor. Rat studies indicate that cariporide blocks apoptosis of cardiac muscle cells. Additional studies show that the compound interacts with and weakens mitochondrial Ca2+ overload and the permeability transition pore (PTP).
