Carbadox is a potent antimicrobial agent with broad-spectrum activity against bacteria, including S. typhimurium strains (MICs = 3.6-14.3 µM under aerobic conditions) and S. hyodysenteriae isolates from pigs (MIC90 = 0.006 μg/ml). Its applications include suppressing aldosterone production, investigating the dissemination of shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) strains, and comparing antimicrobial activities. Carbadox inhibits bacterial growth through intercalation and the induction of mutations in the bacterial genome.
