Carbachol is shown to be a non-selective muscarinic cholinergic receptor (mAChR M) and AChR agonist that causes inhibition of apoptosis in cultured rat cerebellar granule neurons. The anti-apoptotic effects of this compound can be completely blocked by 4-diphenylacetoxyl-N methylpiperidine methiodide. Additionally, this agent has been demonstrated to prevent an increase in endothelial cell permeability induced by TNF-alpha and also cause a decrease in phosphor-ERK1/2 and phosphor-JNK 1.
