Buserelin is a peptide that functions as a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist. It acts by binding to and activating GnRH receptors in the pituitary gland, leading to the initial release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). However, with continued administration, buserelin desensitizes the pituitary gland, ultimately leading to decreased secretion of LH and FSH. This results in a reduction in the production of sex hormones such as testosterone and estrogen. At the molecular level, buserelin′s interaction with GnRH receptors inhibits the synthesis and secretion of gonadotropins, thereby disrupting the normal hormonal feedback loop. This disruption ultimately suppresses the function of the gonads, which may be useful for studying the regulation of reproductive hormones and related physiological processes.
