BTCP maleate, a compound that differs from phencyclidine by containing a benzothiophenyl group instead of a phenyl ring, is a potent DAT (dopamine transporter) inhibitor. BTCP maleate competitively inhibits the binding of PCP to PCP receptors in the rat cerebellum. Studies suggest that this agent also protects dopaminergic neurons against neurotoxins.
