Bryostatin 1 is structurally unique macrolactone marine natural product that binds to and modulates PKC (protein kinase C) activity at picomolar concentrations, but is not a carcinogen or a complete tumor promoter. In many systems it induces only a subset of the responses to PMA and blocks those which it does not induce. It is markedly more potent than PMA for translocating PKCdelta and -epsilon. Animal tests have shown bryostatin 1 may alleviate brain damage after a stroke. Bryostatin 1 administered with lactacystin has displayed synergistically induced apoptosis in human leukemia cells.
