Brinzolamide is an inhibitor of carbonic anhydrase, an enzyme that catalyzes the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide. Brinzolamide works by reducing the production of aqueous humor in the eye, thereby decreasing the pressure within the eye. It is a sulfonamide derivative and is structurally related to acetazolamide, another carbonic anhydrase inhibitor.
