QUICK LINKS

Blasticidin S Hydrochloride, like puromycin (sc-205821), belongs to a group of cytosine amino nucleoside antibiotics. Blasticidin S is isolated from Streptomyces griseochromogenes and inhibits protein synthesis in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, Blasticidin S Hydrochloride acts quickly by inhibiting peptide bond formation by the ribosome. The blasticidin S resistance gene (BSR), found in Bacillus cereus K55-S1, has been used in multiple studies for its use as a selective compound. Resistance is conferred by expression of one of two Blasticidin S deaminase genes: BSD from Aspergillus terreus or bsr from Bacillus cereus. These deaminases convert Blasticidin S to a nontoxic deaminohydroxy derivative. Blasticidin S Hydrochloride is used as a selection agent for transformed cells that contain the resistance genes bls, bsr or BSD.
