It is a coordination compound, which is a compound composed of a central metal atom surrounded by ligands. It acts as a catalyst used in an ether-directed aza-Claisen rearrangement for organic synthesis. Bis(acetonitrile)dichloropalladium(II) also serves as a reagent for the preparation of other coordination compounds and as a biological probe for the study of biomolecules, such as proteins and DNA.
