Biliverdine is a precursor of Bilirubin that is formed in the body from hemoglobin. Biliverdin serves as a precursor and porphyrin bile pigment in the biosynthesis pathway of bilirubin. It is generated through the oxidative breakdown of heme by heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), and subsequently converted to bilirubin by biliverdin reductase. At concentrations exceeding 0.5 µM, biliverdin exhibits antioxidant properties as demonstrated in oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) and Trolox equivalent absorbance capacity (TEAC) assays.
