β-Glucosidase, also known as beta-glucosidase or β-D-glucosidase, is an enzyme that plays a role in the metabolism of various organisms, including plants, animals, and microorganisms. It is part of the glycoside hydrolase family of enzymes and is responsible for the hydrolysis of β-glycosidic bonds. The primary function of β-glucosidase is to break down complex carbohydrates, particularly β-glucosides, into simpler sugar units. It catalyzes the hydrolysis of the glycosidic bond between a β-glucose molecule and another compound, releasing glucose as the main product.
