Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) is used in a variety of industrial and consumer products, such as plasticizers, lubricants, and adhesives. Benzyl butyl phthalate is also used in the manufacture of plastics and other synthetic materials. In addition, Benzyl butyl phthalate binds to estrogen receptors and can interfere with the normal functioning of these receptors. This can lead to a variety of biological effects, including changes in gene expression, endocrine disruption, and reproductive toxicity. Benzyl butyl phthalate may act to be a potent mutagen in cell cultures. It has also been reported to have an inhibitory effect on the activity of certain enzymes, such as cytochrome P450 enzymes.
