Benzalkonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound that functions as a cationic surfactant. It acts by disrupting the cell membrane of microorganisms, leading to leakage of cellular contents and ultimately causing cell death. This chemical′s mode of action involves its interaction with the lipid bilayer of the cell membrane, leading to disruption of the membrane′s integrity. This disruption results in the loss of cellular function and eventual cell death. Benzalkonium chloride′s function as a surfactant allows it to effectively interact with and disrupt the membranes of various microorganisms, which may be useful for research and development purposes.
