A colorimetric reagent for iron detection, where it chelates with Fe(II) at pH 2-9. The red color complex can be extracted with isoamylalcohol. This compound is also used in ruthenium II tris (bathophenanthroline disulfonate), a fluorescent metal chelate used for staining proteins separated by electrophoresis (RuBPS stain).
