Barban, classified as a carbamate ester and an acetylenic compound, functions primarily as a herbicide. It belongs to the group of monochlorobenzenes. As a weak anticholinesterase inhibitor, it exhibits pesticidal properties akin to organophosphate insecticides. Carbamate pesticides, derived from carbamic acid, target insects using a mechanism similar to that of organophosphates. Barban, when subjected to decomposition by heat, releases highly toxic fumes containing hydrogen chloride and nitrogen oxides.
