Atorvastatin is an inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase. In vivo, it reduces cholestorol synthesis. While increasing HDL cholesterol levels, Atorvastatin simultaneously lowers serum levels, as well as LDL choesterol, apoB, and triglyceride levels. It is a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme HMG-CoA (3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A) reductase, which catalyzes the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate, an early rate-limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis.
